SCIENCE AND SPIRITUALITY
AN OVERVIEW OF ALL THE SECTIONS
SECTION I: The Theme
Philosophy points to a Reality other than the Scientific Reality of which we seem to know so much. We only
seem to know, because scientific reality is itself pretty complicated. But there is a more subtle Reality, namely the Spiritual Reality, of which the ancient sages of India have waxed eloquent and ended up saying 'it is beyond words'! They say that has to be 'experienced'. Go to THE THEME
SECTION II: The Concept
The concept of this experience is the science of Vedanta. It is as good a science as Mathematics, in fact 'more' consistent and more amenable to personal verification than all the sciences. Vedanta talks about the larger religion which calls for Spirituality rather than rites and rituals and this is no antithesis to science. But in one sense it is, namely in the requirement that it has, of the scientist to look
into himself in addition to looking at the 'objective' world. Go to THE CONCEPT
SECTION III: The Path
There is evil in the world but only the path of Spirituality can transform the mind to overcome these evils. The process has to start with the individual and snowball into a societal wave. The mind needs a continual online correction to discipline itself so that it exploits the presence of the only two noble tendencies, namely
Faith and Devotion, to counteract the thirteen not-so-noble tendencies of the mind -- all of them having come as a legacy of a long journey of the soul through its several lives. Go to THE PATH
SECTION IV: The Wonder
Disbelief has to be willingly suspended if one has to sort out the phenomenon of wonders and miracles that religion and spirituality are ever full of. If at all they happen, what is their purpose?
The purpose is not to prove anything but to demystify the individual ego from its arrogance always embedded in it and turn it around to see what cannot be seen and to sense what cannot be sensed! Go to THE WONDER
SECTION V: The Proof
Spiritual Reality has a logic behind it. But it is not the logic of the finite science. It is the logic based on the hypothesis of Infinite Existence, Infinite Knowledge and Infinite Bliss.
The towering proof of the very hypothesis is the long lineage of sages, seers and saints -- the very listing of their names is impressive if not overwhelming. Proof there is, but not in the way in which the scientist would want it.It is a different algebra altogether, so the kind of proof is of a different nature. It is in the nature of experience authenticated by every one in this roll of spiritual honour. Go to THE PROOF
SECTION VI: The Paradox
The paradox is that of the dilemma between the mind and hand of God that these devotees of the Lord seem to emphasize and the free will and self effort that common sense and rational thinking always support.
What is dominant? Fate or Free will? One begins by answering: the Latter. That this is an ignorant answer is what we ourselves realise as our ignorance gives way to a better and better understanding of the ways of the inner self which gives the power to the central processing unit in us. Those on the higher steps of the spiritual ladder declare: your freedom is constrained until you have replaced your free will by the will of God! Go to THE PARADOX
SECTION VII: The Type
Why is it difficult to surrender the will? Much depends on the individual's innate tendencies which he has brought from his behaviour, during all his eternal past, with respect to six entities: Knowledge, Action, Doer, Intellect, Will, Happiness .
Based on this he belongs to one of four character-types. In each life he has to lift himself up in the spiritual ladder to the level where the satva mode has a more and more dominant influence on all his thoughts and actions. Go to THE TYPE
SECTION VIII: The Lesson
Education in Spirituality, where hast thou gone? To transmit the multidimensional perspective of Spirituality to the next generation it is necessary to agree on a
Master Plan for restructuring the educational system itself so that it incorporates the habits of spirituality -- like Introspection, Meditation, Analysis of human behaviour through study of Biography and Religion, -- in the curriculum from as early a level as possible. The Master Plan is outlined. Go to THE LESSON
SECTION IX: The Consummation
Can the Finite reach the Infinite? Yes, if the finite goes through the discipline of shedding its finiteness. The eight limbs of discipline described in Patanjali's yoga sutras give the systematic streamlined training to the finite mind in the finite body to attempt to reach the Infinite. The process is usually called Meditation. One path to meditation is concentration through
japa. Meditation ultimately slips into samaadhi if conditions are right. In this culmination of meditation there lies the meeting point of Science and Spirituality. The result of this culmination is the attitude of an equanimous view of the whole universe which reason alone is not able to provide though it is a perfectly reasonable view. Go to THE CONSUMMATION
